Bunions

A bunion is a prominent bump below the big toe joint. It can be painful and in some instances will cause the big toe to either under or overlap the second toe, which can impact the way a person walks. The deformity can develop from arthritis or an abnormality in foot function. It is a genetic condition with the majority of people having a family history of the condition. However, shoewear is also another factor and can speed up the condition.

Sometimes a change in shoewear to something more comfortable, well fitted and less pointed can relieve pain. A podiatrist can help by recommending an orthortic (insole), which offloads the pressure in the joint and can help prevent the bunion getting any worse. Advice can also be given on shoe options.
